> trail descriptions and history

Unlike many of the other trails described in this book, the trails in the Ucluelet and Tofino area are shorter day hikes rather than multi-day backpacking treks. Generally the trails are not only shorter but considerably easier to hike, and better maintained than the longer trails. Some of these trails may be done in a few hours and others may take a long day. Numerous facilities for dining and accommodation are available in either of the two main towns on the Long Beach Peninsula. Hiking these trails in conjunction with a weekend or longer stay allows the visitor to experience the beauty of the west coast in an easily accessible fashion. However, the same hazards, such as tides, rogue waves, weather and hypothermia, that apply to the longer trails must be considered if you intend to walk these trails. The hikes are described in this chapter from south to north, going from Ucluelet to Tofino.
